Superman : Doomsday

DVDreview.com reports that Superman : Doomsday the animated film will see a direct to DVD release on about Sept 18, 2007.

Quote:
DC Comics and Warner Home Entertainment are working together to bring Superman to his greatest comic battle in Superman Doomsday on DVD.
Superman Doomsday is inspired by the best-selling graphic novel of all time, DC Comics’ The Death of Superman. When the intergalactic serial killer Doomsday is unearthed, Superman meets the creature head on in the battle to end all battles. Going punch for punch, Superman finally ends the threat of Doomsday as he throws one last punch and collapses forever – making the ultimate sacrifice to save Metropolis and all those he once loved.
The DVD will arrive with over 70 minutes of extras including the featurettes The Clash of the Juggernauts and The Artists Playground along with a sneak peak at the next DVD original movie Justice League: New Frontier and a set top game. The DVD is presented in widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1.
The disc is a way off, coming on September 18th, and rated PG-13. The DVD will be priced at $19.98.
it will be written by Bruce Timm, who directed several episodes of the Superman animated series, Batman animated series, and also the uber awesome Batman Mask Of The Phantasm.

Co-writing will be Duane Capizzi, who has written several epsidoes of Darkwing Duck, Men In Black, Extreme Ghostbusters, The Real Ghostbusters, and (ugg) The Batman.

no director has been named yet, but Bruce Timm is also the art director of Superman Doomsday and worked in the art departments for the Batman Beyond Movies, Justice League and Batman the animated series.

If Timm directs or if they get any of the great directors from the Batman or Superman animated series' like Paul Dini or Curt Geda this should another excellent DC animated film

plus its rated PG-13 and in a March 3rd IGN article, Timm has promised us blood and violence

Yeah, I've been looking forward to this one. I'm especially intrigued by the casting: Adam Baldwin as Superman and James Marsters as Lex Luthor could be really cool.

I'm in on this big time!! Can't wait to see how it's brought forth with Timm at the helm.

On a side note, I picked up The Invincible Iron Man dvd from my local Comic dude on a whim.

I feel far more comfortable getting the Supes/Doomsday dvd.

i know! i don't know what to think about the whole universe being re-cast. Bruce Timm said that it was totally separate from the JLU/Superman/Batman plot line that we have come to know, so he wanted to go with a new cast so that people would get that it was not happening in the same universe.

I wonder how they are going to handle the cross country battle that involved dozens of DC characters all the way from the west coast of the US to the east.

I was really looking forward to hearing everyone doing their old voices, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, etc, especially Kevin Conroy who is always willing to show up and do the voice for Batman. If it had been Tim Daily back as Supes, that would have just made my year.

I loved the Death of Superman series from the first panel.

A huge nondescript green gloved arm punches a nondescript steel wall(?) with a metallic sound ::::KRAANG!!::::: and for 4 panels it goes on like that and at the bottom....... "Doomsday is coming.

There's no doubt Doomsday is the baddest badass Supes has ever come across. But the telling of Doomsdays origins and meeting with Darkseid is a real kick in the pants in "Superman Doomsday - Hunter/Prey" a 4 parter that shows where the beast that "killed" Superman came from. Talk about your "WOW!" realizations.

I'm all in for this one especially if Dana Delany isn't Lois because the Lois in this story is way hotter than Danas voice could pull off. I'm hoping the animation isn't as square looking as the SAS is. It wouldn't do the story any good. Although theres not much of a story, it's kinda like Titanic you know whats gonna happen in the end.

Hmm...okay, urge to kill: lowering. But if he's gonna do this without the original actors(up to and including Conroy/Newbern/Delaney/Brown), then he had DAMN well better do enough of a redesign to make it a totally new deal.

Wow, that is some pretty cool news. I've never bought one of these animated comic movies, but I think this will be a good one to start with. I loved the Death of Superman series.

Just watched the trailer, and "There comes a time when even gods must die"

I just finished watching a very cool round table panel q&a session with the makers of the Superman/Doomsday dvd. Its a free download for those who have Xbox Live. Goto your market place tab and the to the section labeled Comic Con. The video should be pretty easy to find from there. They hint at some very cool stuff to come from DC video animation movies. Check it out if at all interested in the DC universe.

Well, being that I’m a fan of the original comic—and that the DVD was only $12—I decided to go against my better judgment and give this a blind buy. Mistake! I guess it was unfair to expect anything close to Mask of the Phantasm, but the production value of Superman: Doomsday looks more like a second rate TV show. The animation is lackluster at best with an extremely irritating frame rate (does Justice League look this poor?). The whole production just looks cheap. The Doomsday fight is pretty good, but it doesn’t last long enough to make the whole film worthwhile.

Making matters worse is the sub-par sound design and voice acting. Adam Baldwin does okay as Supes, but Anne Heche blows as Lois. She sounds like she’s looping a soap opera.

Give this a rent first if you’re thinking about buying, or just skip it.

I actually thought Hache was good as Lois, better than Baldwin was as Superman. Marsters made for a great Lex.

As for the movie, I too was disappointed. It felt like too little material stretched over too long a time. What a waste.

One thing I hated, and I have no idea if this is typical for this sort of cartoon (this is my first time to watch this sort of thing), was the incredible amount of devastation that occurred during all the fights. Building after building is destroyed (made 9/11 look like a walk in the park), and yet all people seemed to care about was Superman. Thousands probably died when buildings were collapsed and punched through, yet it seemed to mean nothing. It just didn't sit right with me.

One thing I did like was...

Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):
Kevin Smith's cameo. His line about the spider is funny if you've seen his Evening With Kevin Smith DVD.

As much as guys like Lex (our Lex, not Luthor ) frequently bitch about superhero movies shot in the misty forests of Montreal, personally, if there were to be a titanic battle between two superpowered demigods, that's exactly where I'd want it to take place, not in the middle of a bustling Metropolis or Gotham where the potential for collateral damage would be catastrophic.

But, that said, one always has to give a certain amount of leeway to this sort of thing. I'm sure if Supes were battling a super-baddie in the middle of Metropolis, he'd do his best to move the action to an area with the fewest number of potential civilian casualties.

Not so much in this cartoon. You think for a second that Supes is gonna move the fight, but he ends up taking it right back to the city.

I thought how they drew Supes face was bizarro...crappy design...at first I thought he was like 70 years old...the design on Lex was much better. I thought the movie was ok though and the fight scenes rocked.

Yeah, it was like he had extra Kryptonian face bones. I thought Lex looked a little off as well. His cheek bones are drawn so high, they look like they lift up to reveal another face... or perhaps a small creature controlling the robot body a la MIB.

Well I've read through some of these replies and thought that this feature might need a little background for people who haven't read it. Now this could probably be treated like any other book (comic or otherwise) to screen translation. There where some definite liberties taken (Lex Luthor being alive is one).

Now in the comic series before Doomsday gets to Metropolis Supes does try to divert him and keep him away from the city for the collateral damage complaint (its a cartoon no one ACTUALLY got hurt) but when Doomsday did finally get to the city, yeah there was way more damage done. The reasons why Doomsdays hatred is so focused on Superman well thats a different story that I won't spoil here but SM knew if it was him he wanted and it had to be in the city then it had to end there. Trust me in the books he didn't want the fight to go down there but you can blame that on a wrestling commercial (in the books). I haven't seen this yet but I've read how Doomsday is "uncovered" which ruins alot of his mystery, he comes out of his ship swinging, and theres no fight with him and the Justice League (the loose terribly by the way all you JL fans HA!). In that way they should have stuck to the books.

They could have taken that whole Lexs (whose not alive in the comics at this point) team uncovers this ship and sets him loose and stuck to the comics intro and Doomsdays trip to metropolis. Would have been much better. Oh Well I guess I'll have to find someone who has this and borrow it from them.
