Two things... what movie is that?
and... how's that M301 been treating you. i bought my g/f that model for x-mas and it's been one glitchy summa-bitch. out of sync audio, menus that go nowhere, and glitchy picture. all of which i tried on my toshiba sd-1600 and play fine.

The flick is Oceans Eleven, and I love my m301. I got it from the first shipment my best buy got in. That was about a year ago now, and its been treating me fine ever since. My one and only complaint is that the load time seems slightly excesive, but its definatly tolerable. And you wanna here something funny I got my girl friend the SD1600, last summer. I like them both, I opted for the Samsung when it came out because it had mp3 playback and I liked the joystick remote (it also matches my TV )

Ok so my upgrade is well documented on this site, but here are the pictures...
Upgrades are:

Video:
Pioneer DV 563a
Motorola HD cable box
Infocus X1 DLP projector
AVT Component Video Routing Switch

Audio:
The Polk rs25 were moved from the surround to the mains, for lack of space.
Polk cs245 center (remains)
Wharfdale wh2 bipolar surrounds
Infinity Entra 2 Subwoofer
Sony stdr685 receiver (remains)

I appologize for the screen shot, but I just cant seem to get on that does the pj justice, the image truly is far better than that.

I appologize for the screen shot, it really does not do the x1 justice, the picture quality is quite a bit better in person.

As you can see this setup is still somewhat temporary. I need to hide the speaker wire, run cabeling and mount the PJ on the ceiling. Also that screen is temporary its actually 60x40, it needs to be 60x33.5 to be 16:9, so I either need to cut it down to size, or more likly get a properly framed and mounted screen. And that is my old interlaced DVD player sitting on top of the center channel (Im having problems with Pioneer).

After looking at the pics the screen doesnt look as large as it really is, granted its small for a FP setup, but its still 60" wide (about 70" diag).

Boy, your room never looks as nice in the pictures as it does in real life does it? The couch really isnt as ratty as it looks, and the room is actually quite neat.

yup, good old waltmart. My flexy rack had an unfortunate accident, and we just found this one one day. The only problem is that its like 8" too tall, so I had to move the screen up on the wall, the viewing angle isnt much differnt, but the PJ needs to be angled so high that the keystones are maxed out.

Im still not terribly happy with them. I think part of it has to do with the pause on the dv563a, it doest seem to freeze the image as sharply as my other players did.

Ill keep trying.

They look awesome! I've been using Monsters Inc to show off my projector too The colors and clarity make it the perfect movie to show what a projector can do.

I really like the setup, but just one question. Why only 70" diagonal? It looks kinda small... is it because of where you have the projector placed? If you can, I would definitely ceiling mount it in front of that window. Then you would get more throw distance and a bigger picture to fill that wall You could even make a DIY ceiling mount and save a lot!

Well I it looks a lot smaller than it really is, that chair is 4 feet wide, and that rack is 4 feet tall.

But the reason I cant go larger is really space. If I go any further to the right the door comes into play, and if I go any further left the image wont be anywhere near centered. As it is now, the image is centered to the far left seat on the couch.

I new I wasnt going to be able to get a HUGE image, I actually begain looking for a RPTV, and couldnt find any that I liked. As it is its still 5" larger than any RPTV I have seen.

I 8 Piglet,

Nice setup! What kind of screen are you using for the X1?

I just ordered an X1 from Dell the other day (couldn't resist the final shipped price of $755 )

Right now the screen is just office max foam board nailed to the wall. I works really well, although I wouldnt suggest it as any type of long term solution. Im in the middle of building a screen, using black out cloth, and some sort of paint, but its kinda tough here in Philly so, I probobly wont finish it untill I have a chance to get back to NY and make use of my parents garage.

I got mine for $800 but that was a couple of months ago. I bought it at a BB in delaware, so I walked out of the store with it, and didnt even have to pay Tax

By the way, I have read that Dell is having problems getting them out, are you experiencing this?

Yes, I heard about the delays on the X1 @ Dell.. And personally, I HATE Dell.. but I just couldn't resist.. I think my expected ship date is in December. I heard others had the same ship date and was shipped within 3 days.. makes no sense, but that's Dell.. Anyways, at that price, I can be patient.. as long as they don't cancel my order because the "price is too low"(they did this to me twice already!), I'll be happy..

I gotta do a lot of prep-work to support a front projector anyways.. finding the appropriate VGA switcher & cables, celing mounts, moving existing equipment around and snaking wires behind walls...After reading everything and anything about front projectors in the past few days, I've decided to paint my wall gray and use that as a screen first..I have a feelng I'm going to be switching between 4:3 and 16:9 a lot.

I think painting your wall first is a good idea. I have the limited amount of space, so I maxed out the size of the 16:9 image, and never use 4:3, I watch all sdtv in native mode. I find that when I do watch 4:3 tv in 4:3 the image is just to big, sdtv looks like crap for the most part, so Im content with the native mode.

You plan on building a mount right? The premade ones are teriibly overpriced. Also, are you planning on running an HTPC? if not why do you need a VGA switcher?

Yes, I have an HTPC.. it's currently connected to an old 57" Panasonic HDTV (the 1st HDTV released in the US..I've had it for like 5-6 years now). I mainly my HTPC to play games (ie. MAME) or feed MP3s to my HT... I've never have been quite happy with WinDVD, PowerDVD or the Sonic Cineplayer..

I've always wanted a front projector.. I feel it's the ultimate in HT.. The X1 seems like a good starter unit for me..something that looks good and I can experiment on and messup without fear of destroying a $3000 projector..Admittedly, seeing your great pictures here and finding the Dell deal has finally put me over the edge.. me wants!

I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible as the holidays are coming so yes, I'm exploring ways to DIY everything (including the mount) and not have it look ghetto Maybe I'll create some kind of work log post so everyone can see the changes I'm making to my living room..

I know there are DIY mount plans for the X1 available on http://www.avsforum.com if you search the '$3,500 and Under' board. Since manufacturers know that someone who is making their own home theater has money (or.. had money ), they seem to overcharge on accessories whenever possible. The ceiling mount for my 1HD was over $200 and I made one (which is decent looking and very strong) for $20. Welcome to the projector club

Also, your setup is looking great I8Piglet.... but it reminds me of my projector going unused at home I have to remember to take lots of screenshots the next time I'm home.

I would definatly say give it a try. The only think I might caution is that you still use the 4:3 mode (dont you?), so you would be forced to decide on a 4:3 frame or a 16:9 frame, and it may in the end have the opposite effect for you. I only use 16:9 and native modes, so that wasnt a concern.

One quick question. Doesn't the ventilator noise bother you? You don't project from a separate room and use no hushbox, right?

I tried 3 different projectors in the last 2 weeks (ranging from 1000 - 2000 Dollars/Euros) and they all, even at whispermode with 27db, were too loud. Not to mention that none came close to accomplish the contrast levels every average tv set can.

I use both 4:3 and 16:9...
so then I guess it's probably not for me then...

Riedenschneider, I have an X1 too and it's about 4 feet above my head.. The fan noise doesn't bother me...especially when I'm absorbed in what I'm watching..
