LeonardShelby's HT

Since I'm new around these parts - I figured the best way to introduce myself is to share my Home Theater with everyone. I've painstakingly put this together over the years, upgrading when I could afford it...and when I couldn't afford it. As always...it is a work in progress. So without further ado:

LeonardShelby's HT -

The Rack: (Top to Bottom)

Phillips DirecTiVo DSR6000
JVC HiFi VCR HR-VP75U (still works great when its used...mostly for my daughter's tapes)
Panasonic DVD-A110
Yamaha RX-V595 Receiver (Pre-DTS)
Technics Digital Surround Processor SH-AC500D (used for DTS DVDs and Dolby Digital Programming through STARZ! & HBO)

The TV -
Sony WEGA 36" - KV-36FV15 (not Digital - but a nice TV just the same)

The rack underneath the TV-
Pioneer Laserdisc CLD-980 (pre-AC-3)

The Speakers:
Front Pair - Polk Audio RT800i
Center - Polk Audio CS175i
Surrounds - JBL (can't find model #)
Subwoofer - JBL PSW800

Upstairs Master Bedroom:
TV - 27" JVC AV-2780S (12 years old and still a nice picture)
Phillips DirecTiVo DSR6000 - (yup - a two TiVo family!)
Sony DVD S-560D
Sony Home Theater in a Box Package HT-DTTD740
Sony Playstation 2
Sega Dreamcast

The Pics - Hopefully these will work - if not I'll work on getting them up ASAP!

is it me or are those pics fuzzy? From what I can make out it seems pretty shweet.

I had the rxv593 before I got the rxv2095 six months later I loved the old big silver rectagle remotes.. they were awkward but looked really stylish.

can you get better pics?

Unfortunately - The one thing I don't have is a true Digital Camera - I use my Sony DV as a Digital Camera for these purposes and as you can tell - it sucks.

Nice Digital Video though!

I'll see what I can do about borrowing a proper Digital Still Camera to get some better pics. I figured these were better than none though!

Again sorry about the fuzzy pics - I'll see what I can do about getting some better ones.

Next upgrade will probably be to a Digital/HDTV. I'm not in a real big rush since TiVo does not yet make an HDTV receiver. I figure I'll wait for now. Getting the HDTV would only mean getting the Progressive Scan DVD player so that I could immediately enjoy the anamorphic DVD's etc.

The Yamaha receiver is a nice receiver with the inputs to upgrade to dts. I would have just gotten rid of the Yamaha, but I stumbled upon the Panasonic DSP with dts as an open box deal at Sears of all places. I got it for $58 (they were just clearing a whole bunch of stuff out and I happened to be in the right place at the right time!), which was far cheaper than buying a new receiver. Especially since I was pretty happy with the Yamaha to begin with!

Cheers!

dvds'r'us - Actually, I used Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon because it was the only Superbit title I own. I love the transfer of the film. I love the film, but not my favorite. I'm more of a Coen Brothers/QT/Soderbergh kind of guy.

CruiseControl - So far I'm really surprised at how much I've enjoyed the Sony "740". Our bedroom is about 12'X14' and its plenty enough power for that small of a room. If you're looking for a decent "Theater in a Box" package and you already have the DVD player, I'd recommend the 740 or the 840 (which basically just has more power than the 740...I believe its 500w vs. 425w). The receiver that it comes with is pretty decent considering its "HT in a box". The speakers are nice and small...which was a big thing in keeping the missus happy! The sub doesn't seem to have a lot of ooomph, but still, enough for an upstairs bedroom. I wouldn't recommend the '740' for a living room environment unless you were on a very tight budget or you had an apartment with neighbors who were liable to complain OR you just have a small living room. Bedroom should work out fine though!

If I'm able to borrow a Digital Camera, I'll try to put up some pics of the bedroom setup as well as new pics of the Family Room setup.

Leonard: What video setting do you have you Wega on? I have the same TV as yours but I can never find the setting I like. I've tried adjusting it with Video Essentials and the Sound&Vision disc.

Right now I've adjusted the standard setting to something inbetween the default standard setting and vivid.

The picture is about 70%, brightness at 60%, color is just over to the right, tint is in the middle and sharpness is at about 45%. The enhanced edge is set to low.

It's not too bad, I just wonder what others set it to.

I use the "Movie" setting. Absolutely the most pleasing to the eye.

I'll try to post later the exact positions of the brightness, picture etc. settings. I think your settings are about where I have them.

Yes, vivid is crap. It jacks up all the setting you don't want jacked up.

I've heard either movie or pro, though personally, I use movie as it seems to get the best film look.

Kimmo:
Regarding the settings for our Sony WEGA - this is where my settings are currently and I'm very happy with the picture.

Please note: I have my DVD player hooked up via the Component outputs and my DirecTiVo Satellite Receiver is hooked up via S-Video connections.

Video mode: MOVIE
Picture + 12 (from the point furthest left) (looks like this ||||||||||||.......)
Brightness + 15
Color + 18
Hue + 8
Sharpness + 8
Color Correct:OFF
Trinitone:HIGH

Let me know how it looks to you. I adjusted mine using the Sound & Vision HT Setup DVD (basically the same tests as the Avia DVD).

Update on my HT equipment !

I'm pretty excited about this -

I picked up a Panasonic RP-56 DVD player today as an open box item at Circuit City for $139 !

Here's the story - I've had my eye on this particular DVD player for a while and noticed that the Circuit City by me had one as an open box. Seems that they are preparing for the new Panny players to come in shortly. I've read all the raves about this player and the great chip inside and all that.

Anyway - today at another local Electronics chain (Nobody Beats the Wiz) they advertised new RP-56's for $179.99 w/2 free DVDs - your choice of The Mummy Collection (2 DVDs) or Star Wars Episode 1 & The Fast & the Furious.

CC had a price of $179.97 on the Open Box unit. I went there this morning, explained to the "qualified CC salesperson" that the WIZ had the same thing - except new - for .02 more + 2 free movies. He went and spoke to his "qualified CC management type person" and they offered the RP-56 to me for $139.

Since I didn't want the Mummy Collection and I already own Star Wars EP1, its was exactly what I wanted them to do. Knock $$ off the OB item.

Warranty is the same as if it were NEW and the unit LOOKS like its never been used! (Came with everything - cables, remote, instruction manual, batteries - the whole works).

The reason I'm excited about this is that its a progressive scan DVD player. Even though I don't have a digital TV yet, this is kind of my first step towards that world!!

I'm hoping to work on the wife a little bit over the next few months to buy a 16:9 Widescreen HDTV in the 1st Quarter of next year. This is going to be tough since we only bought the 36" WEGA a little over 2 years ago. (Which at the time I got an unbelievable deal on...paid $1249 when the same model was going for $1799 everywhere else! Happened upon a sale at the right place at the right time!

Wish me luck!
