Iguana Man's Living Room !

Well I got an upgrade to my living room after 10 years. Out goes the Mitsu 27" (damn thing didn't even have S-Vid, but I still like it!).

In comes this puppy......TV

Still running an old Pio 603 as the a/v receiver. Got a Onkyo 6 CD changer, and believe it or not "White-Van" speakers. DirecTv too.

Pics coming soon.....

HD-ILA?

Is that a different Tech than Dlp? (Not sure, but I think Dlp uses a 1 chip system)

From what I understand it's LCOS. It's a kinda combination of LCD & DLP, but without their drawbacks. No DLP rainbows, and no LCD screendoor. It's a pretty amazing picture so far and I haven't even calibrated it yet. Deep blacks, bright as the morning sun, and incredible color.

DLP can be 3 chip too but it's mucho expensive.

Edited: Here's a pic of the TV from a thread over at AVS. Halle on the JVC (grab your bib first )

Do you know if those LCoS sets are susceptable to burn-in?

Absolutely NO burn in from everything I've read.

EDITED: I just ripped my old Pio DV-05 outta the HT room and hooked her up to the TV via a crappy S-Vid cable....Great Googilly Moogilly!

It looks f-ing nice! HELLBOY has deep reds that don't seem 'pushed', and the blacks are to die for! In fact, the blacks are soooo good maybe they aren't? I may have that "black crush" I've heard mentioned. They are so black I don't see some detail in the shadows....BUT! I have yet to calibrate this puppy so for now...It's sweet, and potentially sweeter!

PICS! Well, sort of....to be honest folks, I suck at taking pics, I couldn't figure out how to turn the damn flash off, and I got little patience with these things....so, keep that in mind while viewing these shots. Also, I have yet to calibrate the TV with AVIA, and this is via a Pioneer Elite DV-05 (old by todays standards) fed by S-Vid.

Iguana, thanks, glad I could help out with your decision.

As for photoshop, ask away, I use the program to earn a living.

Okay, assuming the camera is outputing as jpegs, and you have large images the proper procedure for resizeing this this:

In the menu in photoshop, Go Image -> Image Size

You'll see two sections, pixel dimensions and Document Size, just resize one of the values in Pixel Dimensions. You should see that there's a chain or link between the values, this preserves the aspect ratio of width and height. There should also be some check boxes, all should be clicked. So with that right, just set it to a moderate pixel dimension, for these boards go about 650-700 pixels width wise. Since the dimensions are linked the height will automatically be adjusted. Click OK.

Then go up and select Save As... make sure it's of a jpeg. You'll then be present with some JPEG compression option, I think 8-9 is a fine setting for web jpegs.

Then save, I usually upload my photos to www.imageshack.us

Then just past that link in here. Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions.

Nice gear, but I'm sorry, I don't see the attraction of placing the display in a corner. To me, it looks a little off, and what do you do with your speaker placement?

You've got great stuff and a nice looking house, don't get me wrong, I'm just wondering.

Puting the screen in the corner is one way to maximize the distance between you and the screen. That's important with RPTVs.

I like the overall look. It's the living room, so unlike a dedicated home theater the tv isn't the centerpiece of the room. It's a nice accessory to it, but when turned off it's not distracting for the people in it I suppose.

I had my old 32" WEGA in the corner when i was going to college, my room was only about 10' by 10' so maximizing space was important, and with the CRTs or RPTVs their shape dictates you have to place them in a way that best uses space unless the room is really big.

Either way it looks cozy, i'm sure with a fire going it'd be really comfortable.

It's cool Chico76. This is the living room, not my dedicated HT. After many years of self debate on the setup, this is really the only way. The room goes further back behind where I was standing to take the shot. They tv is viewable from quite a large angle and the audio isn't as important to me as the video in this room. So, it's probably the best it's gonna be. I'm not even setup for 5.1 in this room since rear speaker placement is not an option without destroying the living room effect. Trust me...I've thought long and hard on it.

More shots above....

Inc' & Titleist:

Thanks....the room is much larger than what you see with a kitchen offset on one side. If I can borrow another camera, I'll take a better pic so everyone can get a feel for why it's setup the way it is.

It's nice, glad I could help you figure out photoshop. It can be a cruel mistress sometimes, but it's ultimately a force of good, not evil as some people can think.

Anyways, the common trick I use for photographing equipment in use is this:

Use a tripod, always, that's the biggest thing I can recommend. Now if you're camera allows for controlling exposure settings and f-stops what you should do is with the camera locked down, meter the light so that the room is properly lit and exposed well. Don't have anything on the screen, if you meter with the screen running you won't likely get a good overall image. Take the shot, you'll be making two images to get an overall properly exposed image. So then with the camera in the same place, turn on a dvd, pause it, then adjust the camera so just the screen is metered properly, this "should" make it so that the screen is light but the background and surroundings are way too dark. In photoshop you can then take both images into eachother and supposing that you didn't move the camera, you should be able to composite the images over eachother, just seperating out the screen and putting it into the lit room. It's a cheat, I know, but it can help out a LOT.

Another thing I do is to create an adjustment layer and mask over the screen, because these plasmas and LCD tvs reflect a WICKED amount of ambient shit.

For example, a few of the last photos I did on assignment:

And here I thought someone would comment on the TV stand !?!?

That was my personal pride and joy in this upgrade! I gutted the thing and dropped the top (components section) down on top of the base unit to make a TV stand. All by myself with a bud....uhhh, buddy, but we had "buds" too!

Seriously, this tv looks sweet....calibration this weekend and HD-DVR receiver is a coming! Next week (6th) is the DirecTv dude showing up for the 3LNB HD Dish.......oh my...football in all it's glory coming to a Iguana Man cineplex near you!

You're setup is looking pretty sweet. I like the looks of your living room. Simple, tasteful, elegant...

...do I detect influence from the fairer sex?

Fairer sex influencing Iguana Man??? Hell no brother! Do you not see the Steelers Helmet, Batman and Lobo for crying out loud! I haven't a clue as to what your are insinua.....ohhh...the damn window treatments gave it away didn't they?

Actually, to be very honest and with no bad humor at all, the living room still has many of Mom's influences. God bless her soul, it was her house and I've changed very little over the years. In fact, the only things I have changed are the addition of the items I mentioned above. And the chicks love to see a single guy with 'simple', 'tasteful' and 'elegant' decor that is kept clean and tidy! Now, where those chicks are I haven't a clue, but I'm still trying!

Well I'm serious when I say it looks nice. I'm impressed. I'm very picky about interior design in my digs. My wife and her friends say that's my feminine side & I'm better at it than they are.

Have you tried changing your persona, from Iguana to say...big snake (ducking).

BTW: check my page...I solved my center speaker problem (we discussed a while back), very nicely I think.

IGGY, That room needs some Axioms!

Just kidding. Are you planning on updating the speakers in that room, though? I really think the small Axioms would look great in the room. Not overpowering, but clean. I also think the little Monitor Audio Radius speakers would complement it well.

That TV looks really nice. JVC seems to have really made a great unit.

I was wondering when someone would comment on those old "White Van" speakers!

Actually Snip', the speakers are ok for now and have served me well for many years. One thought is to delve into replacing their drivers. It would be fun to give that a whirl I think and cost me less. Especially since the dedicated HT room is getting a Z2 PJ upgrade.

Oh yeah, I bought some component cables yesterday and checked out Nemo again on my Pioneer Elite DV-05 player. I didn't expect much difference over the s-vid cable in pq, but I was happily wrong. WOW, the picture was far better and I am going to leave the old DV-05 as my player for this TV. I also hooked up a Monster Stage 2 power strip and that may have helped the pq, but either way the pq is drastically better.
