Home Theater V3.1

This round of upgrades included buying a new house. Yes...the Mrs. and I have jumped into the waters of home ownership...no more renting, no more landlords. This allowed us to really personalize our family room theater with some color. Additionally, we were able to explore new storage solutions for our ever growing DVD and CD collections...(notice the bookcases behind the sweet spot in the 4th picture below). We also had to part ways with our last couch, it was just too big for the dimensions of our new room...but we found one that suited our needs fairly well and left us with some room to spare.

The layout and seating distance is fairly ideal. I'd have liked to push the front speakers farther apart, but due to the size and placement of the sub, was not able to make it work...upgrading the front stage might pose some future difficulties but I'm sure a workable solution can be achieved when the time does come.

A lot of the equipment is the same from previous iterations, but there are some noteworthy additions...the most noteworthy being the SVS PB12-Plus. This sub is flat out AWESOME. For one thing, it's size alone is foreboding. This thing is HUGE...but damn does it put out some great bass. Very authoritative but also articulate. Not muddy or boomy at all. Music is very controlled and precise and movies never lacked for impact. It's probably over twice the size of my last sub but infinitely better in it's performance capabilities.

As it stands, I couldn't be happier with my latest round of revisions...a new house, some new equipment...what more could a guy ask for?

**The previous two iterations of my setup can be found Here**.

Very nice, PM!

I hope you like the SVS more than I did.

So far it has not disappointed...I've had it for about two weeks now and have finally had a chance to really tweak it to my liking and get the tuning dialed in...I was demo-ing some scenes earlier (Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, LOTR:FOTR...the usual) and the PB12-Plus is so much better than the old JBL PB-10 that I replaced. It's unfair to even try to compare.

I really do think that there was either something wrong with the sub that you received or you were sitting smack dab in the middle of a room null or something...hopefully your next sub will satisfy you as much as the SVS satisfies me.

Next along the upgrade path is probably a larger display, maybe something along the lines of a 61" DLP or similar...I'd like to explore the projector option but with this being a family room/theater I'm just not sure that a front projector would be practical...perhaps if I ever have a dedicated room.

I've also been contemplating upgrading the mains/center/surrounds...I've got an Axiom Audio package in mind that just might work out if I can figure out how to arrange the front stage.

Holey Crap! That looks incredible PM! This may not mean much, but damn if you didn't use a red variation in the paint behind your display which I used in my room after weeks of self debate.

Great looking room, and don't think we didn't notice the center up and beyond the TV. I believe you will put a 61" in there and you did that shelf in anticipation.

Well...you've got to be prepared, right?

Thanks for the compliments...The Mrs. and I drew a lot of inspiration for the colors by looking through a lot of pictures of other people's home theaters. We noticed a lot of people using the deep red as an accent color so we almost went in a totally different direction so as not to seem like we were jumping on anyone's bandwagon...in the end, our love for the red won out...we kept going back to it so it just seemed like the right color to go with. Hope you don't mind sharing your color .

Very nice!

Congrats on a new home. Everything looks new & dust-free.

That DLP almost looks like a flat pannel, good stuff.

I'd probably angle the surrounds a bit towards the couch. dunno

I take it ya like bass. WoW, that thing is almost as big as the Tv!

Thanks for the compliment!

So far I've gotten to listen to the Axioms for about 6 hours ( a few hours or background musci listening and a couple of hours of more critical listening)...and I really like what I hear. There's a certain "openness" to the top end that was not as prevalent with my old JBL setup. The midrange is also very good...very good vocal reproduction with music.

I have yet to sit down and get into a movie, but judging by what I hear with music, they should have no problems in that department.

You sir, must be psychic ...just gotta recover from this round of upgrades and pocket some coin for my impending Hawai'i vacation then it'll be back to doing research for my next acquisition...I'm thinking Denon or Pioneer Elite .

Hopefully I'll get some pictures up this weekend.

Good call...I was checking out the 805 not too long ago and it seemed like a pretty good performer, nice heft to it too...but I suppose I'm jumping the gun a bit, it'll be a good 6-8 months before I'm ready to jump back on the upgrade train and by that time there should be a few more choices out on the market.

I wanted to hear Axioms but I never did get a chance. I have the SVS 10 sub and love mine. I really have to watch how loud I turn the movies up because the sub output un-nerves the wife.

Home Theater V3.2 Picturew

Pictures:

Entering The Family Room Home Theater

The Seating Area

The Focal Wall (Speaker Grilles On)

The Focal Wall (Speaker Grilles Off)

The Sweet Spot Area

The View From The Sweet Spot (Speaker Grilles On)

The View From The Sweet Spot (Speaker Grilles Off)

The Components

Motorla HD DVR, Pioneer DV-578a DVD/DVD-A/SACD Player, Samsung NeXus 50 Satellite Radio/MP3 Player, Nintendo Wii

OPPO Digital DV970HD Upconverting DVD Player, Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-Ray Player, Toshiba HD-A2 HDDVD Player, Optical Switch

Pioneer VSX-D711 5.1 Receiver, Axiom Audio VP100v2 Center Speaker

SVS PB12-Plus Subwoofer

Harmony 880 Universal Remote, PS3 Bluetooth Blu-Ray Remote

You might notice that the Axiom logo on the center speaker is upside down...this is actually intended. The Axiom center has a sloped top surface...I placed it upside down to take advantage of that so that the sound emanating from the speaker would fire somewhat upward to the seating position since it's located below the TV. It looks strange in the picture but it works like a charm.

Bonus Post!

Bonus Post!

This is how I repurpose the functional equipment that has been upgraded:

The Gaming Setup Viewed From Behind The Seating Position

The Subwoofer and Some Peripherals

The View Across The Front Stage

Equipment List

Display
  • 32" Westinghouse LCD HDTV SK-32H240S

A/V Reciever
  • Philips FR 968 5.1 Receiver (from a previous HTIB set up)

Cable Box
  • Motorola DCT3416i High Definition Cable Receiver with DVR

Consoles
  • Sony PlayStation 3
  • Sony PlayStation 2
  • MicroSoft XBOX
  • Sega Dreamcast

Peripherals
  • NubyTech Official Street Fighter Anniversary Edition Arcade Stick (Pictured)
  • Logitech DRiving Force Pro (Pictured)
  • Agetec Dreamcast Arcade Stick (Not Pictured)
  • Ascii PS1/PS2 Arcade Stick (Not Pictured)
  • Assorted Controllers, Memory Cards, Dreamcast VMU's, etc. (Not Pictured)

Universal Remote Control
  • Logitech Harmony SST-659

Speakers
  • JBL NSP-1 Speaker System (1 JBL N-Center and 4 JBL N24 Bookshelf Speakers)
  • JBL PB-10 10" Subwoofer

The surrounds reside along the back wall of the room in each corner...there is also a library of games on a 48" bookshelf that is not pictured. My game systems shares the room with my daughter's craft/study table and her kitchen playset...hence the lack of pictures of the other half of the room .

BTW, the Samsung HL-P5063W 50" DLP HDTV is now in my bedroom...what else was I going to do with it?
